How to make a Pressed in X Logo in Gimp

This is a pretty simple Gimp tutorial on how to make a pressed in X logo.

How to make a Pressed in X Logo in Gimp

0:04 hello youtube welcome to another very

0:07 exciting give know-how tutorial and you

0:10 know it's been too long between making a

0:12 tutorial you actually momentarily forget

0:14 how to use your screen capture program

0:16 and you first open it but nonetheless I

0:19 am back with my screen capture program

0:21 working and today we are going to be

0:23 making a pressed in X logo kind of

0:27 similar to that of X boxes but not

0:30 really I guess you'll see what me later

0:32 so the first thing we need to do is open

0:34 up okay so I just opened up a new

0:36 canvas the size really doesn't matter at

0:38 all and I'm going to take you past tool

0:40 and make a shape something like this

0:47 except this looks absolutely horrible so
0:49 just go ahead and adjust your path nodes 0:51 until you get something that resembles 0:56 half of an X so I think that looks about 1:01 good it's maybe a little bit wide but we 1:03 can fix that so go ahead and press ENTER 1:05 to convert that to a selection make a 1:07 new layer and we're going to take the 1:11 fill tool and fill this in black now 1:17 we're going to duplicate this and take 1:20 the flip tool and flip this horizontally 1:23 and then line it up so that it lines up 1:29 perfectly informs this kind of V shape 1:31 and then as you may have guessed we're 1:34 just going to duplicate we're going to 1:36 first right click on the layer merge 1:38 these down duplicate that layer again 1:40 then take your flip tool and flip these 1:43 vertically so then move it down here so 1:47 we get a good-looking X okay so I just 1:50 scaled my X shape down a little bit and 1:52 now I'm going to grab the perspective 1:54 tool right here and I'm going to make 1:58 the X look like it's tilting back a 2:00 little bit so about like this one thing 2:05 you want to make sure when you're doing 2:06 that perspective tool is if you want it 2:07 to look symmetrical try to match up the 2:09 angle on this line and this line and 2:12 then make this line straight 2:13 and you can see it straight because 2:14 it'll have no little pixel kings as I 2:16 like to call them and it'll give you a 2:18 nice perspective X so you can go ahead 2:20 and press ENTER to apply that 2:22 transformation and as you can see it 2:23 looks like the X is kind of leaning back 2:26 a little bit and that's what we okay now 2:32 what we're going to do is start making 2:34 it look a little bit pressed in so what 2:37 I first want to do is just to get in the 2:38 center of the image I'm gonna take the 2:40 alignment tool and click these two to 2:42 get it line in the center of the image 2:43 now this is assuming that you have your 2:45 layer size the same as your X so if you 2:47 want to get your layer size that name of 2:49 your X and it is not you just need to go 2:50 layer Auto crop layer and that should 2:52 trim up the layer for you so once you 2:55 have our X in the middle where you want 2:56 it to be go ahead and duplicate your X 2:58 light layer then right click on the 2:59 layer and click alpha to selection once 3:02 you have alpha to selection and click to 3:03 take your paint bucket tool and I'm 3:05 gonna select a nice grey unfill in this 3:08 X with grey then click select none now 3:10 I'm just going to take my move tool and 3:12 nudge the X down and you kind of have to 3:16 see a little bit of perspective here 3:19 imagine that the black are like the 3:22 walls of the X being pressed in and 3:25 you'll see what I mean in a second here 3:26 so go ahead and outfit to selection your 3:29 black X and then go ahead and click 3:32 select invert and then press the delete 3:35 on the gray X or since delete doesn't 3:38 work in my computer I'm gonna have to go 3:39 edit cut and then select none and as you 3:42 can start to see the black is forming 3:45 the wall in essence of how deep we want 3:48 our X to be pressed in so now what 3:50 you'll notice is if we zoom in that this 3:52 is not right because this this triangle 3:55 section right here should be black as 3:57 well and we can't put it below the grey 3:59 layer because if we put them below the 4:00 green layer the grey layer will still 4:01 show up because basically what we have 4:03 right now is this grey layer is just a 4:05 weird-shaped 4:05 X and we've cut out some using 4:07 selections so what we need to do is make 4:09 a layer right above the gray layer and 4:11 then take the paths tool and then if you 4:15 did this correctly you should have a 4:19 straight line directly down and all you 4:24 need to do is make a selection like this 4:26 with the paths will hold can 4:27 all the links to the path again press 4:29 ENTER to make a selection and then fill 4:31 this in with black now actually I think 4:35 I need to move this over maybe one pixel 4:37 now select the black acts layer now 4:41 click select invert and then edit cut or 4:45 delete if you're on a Windows PC and 4:48 delete actually works for you 4:49 now click select none and we you can see 4:52 here that we've filled in this black 4:54 space and it looks a little better so 4:56 all we need to do is duplicate this then 4:58 then take the flip tool flip it 5:00 horizontal and since we know it's 5:03 sensitive since you should have a fairly 5:06 symmetrical X all you need to do is move 5:09 this right here and as you can see we 5:11 have a much better looking pressed in 5:14 effect so we can go ahead and merge 5:16 these layers down and then let's just 5:18 look at our image so if we confuse you 5:20 and 100 cent we can see that our X looks 5:22 a lot more press now what I want to do 5:24 just for consistency's sake is kind of 5:26 consolidate all of these black layers 5:28 into one so I need to select these 5:30 little fillings we made and then alpha 5:33 to selection those and then go to your 5:35 grey X and then click Edit cut or delete 5:39 and now that will make it so that the 5:42 grey X is actually the shape it 5:43 resembles so now we will alpha to 5:45 selection the grey X go to the black X 5:47 then click Edit to cut then click select 5:50 none and once it allows us to do is move 5:52 the black X layer above the grey X layer 5:55 without actually losing this effect so 5:57 all we need to do is merge down these 5:59 little fillings we made with the actual 6:01 black layer and we essentially just have 6:03 a black layer of shading and although it 6:06 doesn't look like we quite got all of 6:08 the gray so if you didn't get all the 6:10 gray like I did just go ahead and make a 6:13 quick path make selection and then cut 6:19 both of these away I wasn't on the great 6:25 layer or you can just grab the eraser 6:27 tool and do it it'll probably be a 6:29 little less tidy but it works ok so 6:34 that's fairly good as far as the gray 6:36 layer goes now we can turn on the black 6:37 shading and oh it's 6:41 forgot we accidentally erased part of 6:46 the black layer which is not what we 6:47 wanted we should just go ahead and we 6:52 should just go ahead and keep in these 6:54 mistakes without editing it to UM 6:56 definitely help the professionalism of 7:00 our tutorial of my tutorial is it work 7:02 okay now right here we're at the stage 7:05 where it's kind of like screwing with 7:06 your mind because you can't really tell 7:07 if it's pressed in or we just like 7:09 screwed up on that perspective when 7:11 trying to make something 3d so in the 7:13 next step we're going to try to fix that 7:16 alright so first what we should do 7:18 before we try to make it look a little 7:20 more depth II is what I want to do is I 7:23 want to separate each of these into 7:25 separate sections just so we can have a 7:26 little easier time shading them out so 7:28 what we're gonna do later so I want to 7:29 separate this little branch this little 7:33 branch and the top branch and so we can 7:36 do that actually really easily all we 7:38 need to do is take the paths tool and 7:40 select around the respective area so 7:44 from this case I'm just going to press 7:46 ENTER go edit cut that's odd I wonder 7:52 why I didn't edit cut there I'm going to 7:54 go edit cut better then go edit paste 7:58 and since this is a floating selection 8:00 all we need to do is make a new layer 8:02 and it's essentially just been pasted 8:04 into a new layer so all we need to do 8:06 then is take that and do that for one 8:08 other layer this one will say 8:20 and we have three separate layers each 8:24 of them containing one one segment I 8:28 guess you could say of the X so I just 8:30 want to make these I want to kind of 8:33 trim them all down so I'm just going to 8:34 go layer Auto crop layer on all of these 8:41 and that was not intended okay so now 8:49 that we have cropped layers we can go 8:52 ahead and start shading so the first 8:54 step to shading this and making it look 8:56 a lot better is deciding on the colors 8:58 you want for your image in this case I 8:59 want the bottom of the X to be blue 9:02 the wallis to be gray and the image to 9:04 be black kind of like an alienware 9:06 gaming gaming theme so I'm going to 9:10 alpha to selection this take the 9:12 gradient tool select the gradient mode 9:14 on radio and I'm going to find a nice 9:18 blue to go to a nice darker blue now 9:22 normally I try to stay away from the 9:24 color darker blue just because I 9:27 generally don't think it looks very good 9:30 but like for this kind of thing we're 9:34 doing I think that this color blue will 9:37 look just fine so that's a little too 9:40 light yet I should probably get okay 9:46 yeah that's better 9:46 now we can go ahead and click select 9:48 none and for the walls I want each in 9:51 the B gray so I need to do is alpha to 9:53 selection ease and color them in a nice 9:56 gray and because fails pretty much 10:06 an anti-aliasing you'll get a little bit 10:08 of edges but those won't matter because 10:10 we'll cover those up with more effects 10:15 okay and now I'm just going to make the 10:17 background a not black but a fairly dark 10:22 grey so let's get the shading on the 10:25 gray parts out of the way so I'm going 10:26 to do the top part first so the first 10:28 thing we need to do is alpha to 10:29 selection those top parts and 10:31 a new layer right on top of them and now 10:34 I'm going to take the gradient tool and 10:35 set the gradient mode on bilinear and 10:38 the gradient on FG to transparent so 10:41 what we're going to do is alternate 10:42 between the colors black and white so 10:44 I'm going to use white for the front and 10:46 as you can see so you want this tip to 10:48 be jutting out and I know this is maybe 10:50 a little bit hard for you guys to see it 10:52 since we want this tip to be jutting out 10:54 we need to maybe make a white gradient 10:56 about like this that's perfectly 10:59 up-and-down now since these are kind of 11:01 in there there and we want to add a 11:04 black gradient to either side so we can 11:07 do is not make a gradient that isn't 11:11 straight but make a straight gradient 11:14 right here and here and maybe that's not 11:18 the best gradient but this is just for 11:20 tutorial purposes so I'm gonna kind of 11:22 go quick here and as long as we 11:26 gradually shade the sides you can go 11:28 ahead and click select none and if you 11:31 reduce the opacity of this layer 11:32 slightly you'll see that we're beginning 11:35 to come out with a decent looking shade 11:37 that helps emphasize that helps show to 11:41 the viewer that we want it to appear 11:44 pressed in rather than a weird 11:47 perspective which still may be a little 11:49 confusing for all of you so we're going 11:50 to have to do a lot more steps so go 11:52 ahead and shade all of the other sides 11:55 so I'll just show you with this side and 11:56 then shade the other during the cut time 11:58 so for this side it's the only white 12:01 that we want is coming off of this end 12:03 so I'm going to take the bilinear 12:05 gradient and stroke a white off of this 12:07 end and then I'm going to stroke a black 12:11 coming from this end and what this does 12:14 is since we can put it on a lower 12:16 opacity it just adds an element of 12:19 realism to the shading and we're going 12:21 to be doing a little bit more with the 12:22 other side now let's keep on adding 12:24 shadows to the sides did the other side 12:27 you can see so now we're going to out 12:29 the selection and on every one we are 12:32 going to take the paintbrush tool and 12:34 select a fuzzy brush around this size 12:40 maybe a little bit bigger and on a new 12:44 layer if you hold 12:45 shift you'll see this line comes up that 12:47 you can draw a straight line with the 12:48 paintbrush so I'm just going to draw a 12:51 straight line with the paintbrush along 12:54 the bottoms of these edges now once I 12:58 have this straight line drawn you can go 12:59 ahead and keep this selected now go 13:02 filters blur Gaussian blur and just make 13:09 it not that much maybe pretty soft 13:12 gouging blur and this further creates an 13:15 illusion of depth okay well you can see 13:17 as a result of recoloring the black from 13:19 the gray we still have these annoying 13:21 lines that put here and now we're 13:23 going to fix those and as you can see 13:24 I've applied that bottom shading effect 13:26 to everything so we're going to alpha to 13:28 selection this um blue X layer make a 13:32 layer right above that and we're going 13:34 to add a shadow to further make it look 13:36 pressed in so select a black and a 13:39 fairly big brush and we're gonna do the 13:41 same thing except this time brush where 13:45 you think shadow should be logically 13:48 from on the X so I think they should be 13:57 right about here and maybe maybe just no 14:04 I don't think that we should be able to 14:05 see any shadows there now I'm going to 14:07 go filters blur Gaussian blur again and 14:11 we can gather this by maybe 19 maybe you 14:16 know let's leave the opacity feely 14:20 opaque then click select none and this 14:22 further gives the illusion that it is 14:24 indeed pressed in but we are not done 14:27 yet we're going to go right outside of 14:30 the X so make a layer right below the 14:32 blue X and everything else for that 14:34 matter and select a white on a fuzzy 14:36 brush and now go around the outside of 14:39 the X in a white 14:48 it doesn't matter if you get anything 14:50 perfect cuz we're blurring it anyway 14:52 okay so once you have a fairly decent 14:56 outline go filters blur Gaussian blur 14:59 again and gouge alert by a pretty 15:02 significant amount and now all we need 15:05 to do is reduce the opacity drastically 15:07 on this layer and this further gives the 15:11 illusion that it is press in so you're 15:14 not starting to see that it's Preston 15:15 maybe you just don't have that good of a 15:18 mind as seeing 3d because I I mean I 15:20 sometimes struggle with that as well but 15:22 we're gonna do a few more things to make 15:24 it seem food eat now we're going to do a 15:26 little bit of paddy work to make it seem 15:28 Preston so we're going to go ahead and 15:30 make a new layer right above the blue 15:31 one again and now this time take a paths 15:34 tool so I'm going to find the passage 15:37 well firstly and then I'm going to make 15:39 a curved path about like this and then 15:43 just make it go around like this 15:46 so press ctrl to link the selections 15:48 then press ENTER and I'm going to take 15:50 the gradient tool and select black as my 15:53 gradient color I'm just gonna kind of 15:55 stroke a gradient about like this and 15:59 now we're going to click select none' 16:01 and select the blue click select invert 16:07 and then go edit cut and this gets rid 16:11 of everything that we don't want so I'm 16:13 a got this shout out maybe a little bit 16:15 too extreme maybe it should be down here 16:16 a little bit and maybe I'll redo that in 16:19 the cut but you know kind of what we 16:21 want now and so I'm going to select a 16:23 fuzzy eraser if we get any bad edges 16:25 like this one and this kind of in 16:29 addition adds to the effect that it is 16:31 3d you can maybe add a shadow right here 16:34 we are nearing the finish line we just 16:36 got to do a few more things so I'm gonna 16:38 duplicate this blue layer and then move 16:40 it to the very top of the stack of 16:42 layers we have now this gets rid of all 16:45 that definitely works so hard to achieve 16:46 but do not worry 16:47 I'm gonna go layer layer to image size 16:50 and I'm going to go filter blur motion 16:52 blur now at this motion blur I'm going 16:57 to scroll down so I can see a preview 16:58 and we're gonna increase the length 17:01 and get the angle to be exactly up which 17:04 looks to be 90 degrees yep 17:11 and so let's see let's go a length of 17:15 about 70 and see how that looks first 17:21 okay that's good now we're going to set 17:24 the layer mode to dodge and what this 17:26 does is it gives us a really glowing 17:28 Preston X effect and maybe you could 17:30 also set this to addition 17:32 dodge or addition your choice I 17:34 personally think Dodge maybe looks a 17:36 little bit better but can look worse 17:37 depending on how bright of colors you're 17:39 using so that is your Preston X effect I 17:42 guess the only thing really needed to do 17:44 left is to make shines so we're we can 17:49 go ahead and make a new layer 17:50 take a radial gradient this time on FD 17:54 transparent and Stroke something about 17:57 like this now go layer Auto crop layer 18:01 duplicate this layer now take the scale 18:04 tool uncheck the chain if you may have 18:08 it checked and we're just going to 18:10 elongate this out about like this what 18:13 we're doing is creating a pretty pretty 18:14 cool 18:15 lens flare type effect and then go ahead 18:18 and merge these down once you have them 18:21 connected so I think maybe this is a 18:24 little bit big now to maybe make it 18:27 something like this and you can go ahead 18:31 and place this and I'm going to probably 18:33 place this on grain merge and then maybe 18:37 duplicated in place at some other place 18:41 except I'm probably going to make it 18:42 smaller and move it over top of your X 18:50 and then duplicate it maybe one more 18:52 time and place it somewhere else maybe 18:56 here 19:12 you're fine good place for it maybe 19:16 there and there you have it YouTube that 19:19 is how to make a pressed in X effect if 19:22 you liked this tutorial subscribe if you 19:24 don't like it then don't subscribe I 19:26 guess I'm not going to try to force you 19:28 so anyway yeah thanks for watching I am 19:30 give know how and this is the end of my 19:32 tutorial
